Maintenance

Respecting the limitations of a material is the foundation for its preservation.

New Teak

Teak furniture is an excellent choice for outdoor living and with regular maintenance will provide years of loyal service. Due to natural variations in the wood, each product and finish may vary slightly. When exposed to sun and rain, the color of the teak will soften to a silver-grey patina. This considered part of the teaks life cycle with many connoisseurs of teak actually preferring the silver patina as a symbol of originality.

Recycled Teak

We apply passion and skill in production - the kind that comes with ancient crafts and centuries-old skills handed down through generations. S2DIO has perfected the art of crafting furniture from Recycled Teak, carefully selecting the wood prior to manufacture to ensure components are used in the most effective way. Recycled teak reacts in the same way as plantation teak when exposed to the elements and will thus provide you with longevity and a firm feeling of reliability when used outdoors. Teak will form a silver patina on the surface when it is exposed to the sun over time. This is perfectly normal and considered part of the teaks life cycle with many connoisseurs of teak actually preferring the silver patina as a symbol of originality.

Maintaining Teak

- Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly.
- For spot cleaning, spray off any debris with a hose and brush off any dirt or debris with a soft-bristle brush. Spores that create mould and mildew thrive in environments with dirt and moisture. Dry with a soft cloth.
- New teak will experience oil surfacing. These areas, which look like a water mark, can be removed by gentle washing.
- Avoid letting water stand on the surface of your furniture and cushions.
- When furniture is not in use for an extended period of time, protect it by covering or storing it. Before covering, furniture needs to be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Cushions should be removed and stored in a dry place if possible.

Kwila

Kwila (also known as Merbau) is considered one of the most durable furniture- grade timbers in the world, with a beautiful natural red colour and rich oils that give it everlasting properties. Its strength and weather resistance make it the perfect timber for even the harshest of climates.

Through the initial weathering process Kwila will naturally leech any excess sap when conditions are wet or damp. This can stain unsealed and porous surfaces.Hosing the furniture down several times on a grassed area will accelerate this leeching process. Because timber is a product of nature, it is impossible to say how long leeching will take, but rest assured it will lessen over time. The sap may stain any covers or cushions placed on the furniture and it is therefore wise to remove these before hosing down.

Maintaining Kwila

- Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly.
- For spot cleaning, spray off any debris with a hose and brush off any dirt or debris with a soft-bristle brush. Spores that create mould and mildew thrive in environments with dirt and moisture. Dry with a soft cloth.
- Kwila timber will leach natural tannins when exposed to rain or heavy dew. This will reduce over time; however, the tannins may stain unsealed or porous surfaces. Strong bleach can remove stains.
- When exposed to sun and rain, the color of the kwila will soften to a silver-grey patina.
- Avoid letting water stand on the surface of your furniture and cushions.
- When furniture is not in use for an extended period of time, protect it by covering or storing it. Before covering, furniture needs to be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Cushions should be removed and stored in a dry place if possible.

Golden Care

To maintain the new look of Kwila furniture the timber should be treated on a regular basis with Golden Care® products. This will also assist in the prevention of warping, cracking and checking caused by moisture absorption and extreme dry heat. Untreated, the timber will gradually weather to a silver ash colour.

Golden Care® Hardwood & Teak Cleaner: For a thorough cleaning, we recommend using Golden Care® Hardwood & Teak Cleaner. Furniture should be thoroughly cleaned periodically and always before storing.

Golden Care® Hardwood Protector Red-Brown: The Hardwood Protector Red-Brown contains the perfect colouring for Kwila. This rejuvenates, protects and brings back the original colour of new Kwila.

Aluminium

Aluminium is an ideal metal for outdoor use as it is strong but also lightweight. All S2dio aluminium is electrostatically coated with environmentally friendly paint which is toughened to minimise scratching and chipping. Aluminium does not rust so the furniture can be kept outside all year around and is corrosion resistant meaning that it will not rust, irrespective of how long it is kept outdoors. The result is furniture that’s virtually maintenance-free.

Maintaining Aluminium

- Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly.
- For spot cleaning, spray off any debris with a hose and brush off any dirt or debris with a soft-bristle brush. Spores that create mould and mildew thrive in environments with dirt and moisture. Dry with a soft cloth.
- Avoid hitting metal furniture pieces against one another and avoid dragging along the ground. On table tops, we recommend placemats to avoid scratches that can chip the finish and promote oxidization.
- Avoid letting water stand on the surface of your furniture and cushions.
- When furniture is not in use for an extended period of time, protect it by covering or storing it. Before covering, furniture needs to be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Cushions should be removed and stored in a dry place if possible.

Cushions

The majority of S2dio's cushions are made from colourfast, Olefin material which is a hardy, water resistant, resin based fabric. We also use polyester fabric which is a natural material but in either event we always recommend storing cushions inside as the foam cores are not weather resistant. When your furniture is not in use for significant periods of time please place it under a form of shelter with careful attention to ensure both furniture and fabric are dry prior to storage.

Maintaining Cushions

- Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly.
- For spot cleaning, spray off any debris with a hose and brush off any dirt or debris with a soft-bristle brush. Spores that create mould and mildew thrive in environments with dirt and moisture. Dry with a soft cloth.
