Materials

Over the years we have built our collections using the finest materials available in the local communities where we operate.

Recycled Teak

Recycled teak has become the foundation of our international success as a luxury outdoor furniture manufacturer. S2DIO was one of the very first manufacturers to introduce true recycled teak into the marketplace for outdoor use and has grown to be Indonesia’s single largest exporter of the finished product. In accordance with responsible forest management principles S2DIO acquires old infrastructure and buildings and utilises the original teak found within those structures. We then salvage the material and pass the material through a series of processes to make it suitable for outdoor use at the same time reducing the depletion rate of valuable forest resources while investing the reclaimed teak with renewed life.

New Teak

New teak, otherwise known as plantation teak, came under criticism in the 90’s due to illegal logging and subsequent impact the activity had on deforestation. Since then, there has been an enormous amount of energy and conservation efforts placed onto this species of tree in Indonesia in order to restore a balance of environmentally friendly action. We are proud to say that all our teak is FSC® certified giving the consumer peace of mind that this particular teak originates from only responsibly managed sources. We are also able to apply a number of finishes and coatings to our teak to give it a range of alluring looks and feels.

Merbau (Kwila)

Merbau is a highly dense hardwood, which grew in notoriety in Australia and New Zealand as an outdoor decking material due to its tremendous durability. S2DIO is one of only a handful of manufacturers that have moulded this sturdy hardwood into luxury outdoor furniture using a fully machine made process for absolute quality precision.

If old wine is best to drink than old wood is best to entertain. Intensely weather resistant, evenly textured and with an outdoor life expectancy of 30-40 years, the fashion and function partnership of the S2DIO Merbau Kwila range is the perfect choice to transform every setting. We are also one of the few producers who are able to blend multiple materials with Merbau Kwila such as artificial rattan or outdoor textile, for instance, in order to give this honest and humble material a more modern feel. A specific set of characteristics of Merbau Kwila that set it apart from other timbers include low maintenance upkeep, flexible utility and minimal shrinkage level due to the natural oils and Tannin contained in the wood.

S2DIO outdoor furniture pieces can be kept in pristine condition for long periods being able to remain outdoors on a permanent basis. Whether to create a dynamic outdoor living space, decorate an intimate garden setting or simply to expand a poolside patio, all of S2DIO's Merbau Kwila (TFT) The Forest Trust sourced materials are expertly assembled with comfort and practicality in mind and come with a “Rating 1” from the Australian Department of Primary Industries rating, the highest standard of suitability for timber used in outdoor furniture. At S2DIO we are dedicated to meeting the needs of the marketplace without losing sight of fundamental social accountability and responsible forest management principles.

Synthetic Rattan

Synthetic Rattan has grown in popularity for its charming appeal and superb resistance to the elements. Weaving of rattan is a specialism of Indonesia and the Philippines who lead the market in being able to weave to the highest possible quality and tension. All S2DIO’s synthetic rattan is woven in Indonesia in our own manufacturing facility to ensure that the weaving quality and care for the workers can always be maintained to the highest level. All synthetic rattan from S2DIO is formulated using virgin material and the very best UV stabilising compounds for long life and colour fastness.

Aluminium

Aluminium is an ideal material for outdoor as it is impervious to rust as well as being light and strong. Another wonderful feature is that aluminium can be painted in an array of colours to keep in step with the latest styles and trends. Our aluminium products are designed and tested in-house in our very own product development workshop to ensure that all constructions are sturdy and strong enough to live up to the rigours of outdoor life. A global trend on the rise has seen aluminium combined with other materials such as recycled teak, new teak and artificial rattan with surprising and truly inspiring results.

Keruing

Keruing is a medium density hardwood species that grows naturally in Indonesia and benefits from solid durability when used outdoors. This material is used in the design and manufacture of a number of luxury outdoor collections and is FSC® certified ensuring that it lives up to the stringent responsible forest management principles & plantation guidelines of the wider international forestry community. Keruing is imbued with a deep brown colour and is considered denser than many basic Eucalyptus woods which tend to give it additional longevity when exposed to the rough and tumble of the elements.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel 304 and 316 are the two most common grades used in the craft and construction of outdoor furniture of which S2DIO has access to both subject to our client demands. We will always recommend a suitable grade of stainless steel to suit the ecosystem which our dealers find themselves. We also use stainless steel for detailing and componentry to compliment other materials such as teak as we find the contrast not only provides greater design flair but also offers structural benefits of heightened finesse and durability.

Cushions

At S2DIO we are one of the few manufacturers that produce their own cushions, the advantage being that cushion firmness and overall comfort can be tailored to the specific market which it is intended. Most of our cushions use a colour-fast, Olefin material which is based on resin and provides a superior water resistance making the cushions more suitable for outdoor use than the low cost alternative, water absorbent polyester cushions found at the budget end of the industry.
